I'm not sure where the saying comes from, but it just means doing some tedious, seemingly unproductive task. Like when you've made a web app, and you've done all the exciting features, and now you're just spending hours and hours trying to make IE register a form submission correctly.
I code web stuff. I started out with basic HTML, then learned CSS, Javascript, and PHP + MySQL. As of November 2010, I'm working in Ruby on Rails, testing with RSpec and Cucumber, and loving it.
Is your "yak shaving" reference of some super specific computer humor or simply an analogy to IE's unwieldiness?
